DJ Cocoa Chanelle is a “Black Girls Rock” Award winning Deejay with over 10+ years experience with Emmis Communications HOT 97 in New York City. Receiving praise from everyone including Grammy award winning artist Missy Elliot… Hollywood Actor/Comedian Chris Rock was quoted saying “Cocoa is Radio Royalty” at his latest movie premiere. First introduce to Djing at a young age by her brother, Andre. “Believe it or not I was a MC entering local talent shows & battles before i was a DJ” explains Cocoa. “my brother use to rap and dj, I wanted to do everything he did so I followed in his footsteps, he got me in this game, he was shot and killed 3 months before I got on HOT 97” Cocoa is no stranger to adversity being born in Brooklyn, orphaned at a young age and raised by her grandmother in Bluefield West Virginia. “when I tell people I lived in bluefield W.Va they usually laugh or say huh? Where’s that?” she explains (laughing). “It’s a small town most people never heard of where you couldn’t hear hip hop or r&b on the radio but that’s where it started for me. I used to practice for hours in the basement, my grandmother called it The dungeon…I was a hip hop fanatic,”I was the kid in class making beats on my books instead of reading them” she’s confesses (smiling). With Emmis, Cocoa accomplished making her “Ladies Night” show #1 in PPM ratings on Saturday Nights in the 8-10pm time slot. Cocoa was honored at the industry’s biggest event for Radio Mixshow DJ’s “Mixshow Power Summit” conference, where she received the award for Best female mixshow DJ of the year. Cocoa spent 7 years on BET Networks as the first DJ ever hired to work for the company as a permanent (in house) DeeJay as well as the first female DJ to work for MTV as the Deejay for their Legendary Spring Break shows.
